Skin Facts

The dermis layer consists of oil glands, blood vessels, nerve endings and sweat glands. The function of the oil glands is to produce sebum, an oily substance that acts as a natural moisturizer. This yields the skin with waterproof properties, and helps keep the nutrients that sustain the skin, so they cannot be washed out. The blood vessels provide the skin with oxygen and essential nutrients, whereas the sensation in the skin is created by the nerve endings. Sweat glands secrete the sweat, so that it helps in temperature control and the protective sticky layer over the skin is due to a combination of sebum and sweat.
